Essential Skills Your Child Should Know Before Summer Camp.

To prepare your child for a successful camp adventure, there are some essential skills they should learn to make the most out of their summer experience.

February 27, 2024

Sending your child to camp is an exciting opportunity for them to make new friends, learn new skills, and experience the great outdoors. To ensure they have a positive and fulfilling camp experience, it's important to equip them with essential skills that will help them navigate various situations and activities. Whether it's their first time attending camp or they're seasoned campers, here are some skills every child should know before heading off to summer camp.

Resilience and Adaptability

Prepare your child for the unexpected by teaching them resilience and adaptability. Encourage them to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks, and maintain a positive attitude even in unfamiliar or uncomfortable situations. A resilient child will learn to make the most out of every situation and always look at the bright side of things. This is important, as some children may be put out of their comfort zones in some summer camp activities, but this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t enjoy and learn from them.

Conflict Resolution

Through summer, campers will meet new people from different backgrounds, ideas and personalities. It is important to help your child develop effective communication and conflict resolution skills to navigate interpersonal dynamics with fellow campers. Encourage them to listen actively, express their feelings assertively, and find mutually agreeable solutions to conflicts that may arise. A good mediator doesn’t only focus on interpersonal disagreements, but also seeks solutions to any situation that may arise during their summer adventures.

Packing and Organization

Involve your child in the packing process to ensure they bring essential items and clothing appropriate for camp activities and weather conditions. Teach them how to pack efficiently, label their belongings, and keep their personal space organized throughout their camp stay. Ask them what things they want to take and make sure they know what they are traveling with and when some things may come in useful. This also applies to over-the-counter medication, comfort items and other accessories to ensure they have everything they need for the summer.

Decision Making and Independence

Encourage your child to make independent decisions and take responsibility for their actions while at camp. Teach them to assess risks, weigh options, and advocate for themselves in unfamiliar situations, with the guidance of camp staff when needed. It’s important that during their time away from home, kids get a sense of independence and learn to navigate through this, recognizing their strengths and putting them to practice while facing new experiences. This will also give them an insight on what skills they need to work on more, their interests and who they are.

Teamwork and Collaboration

One of the main aspects of summer camps is getting to meet new people and working together to achieve great things and unforgettable memories. Emphasize the importance of teamwork and collaboration in accomplishing group tasks and activities at camp. Encourage your child to communicate effectively, support their peers, and contribute positively to group dynamics and team efforts. Good teamwork may be the beginning of long lasting friendships.

Outdoor Skills

Familiarize your child with basic outdoor skills such as setting up a tent, tying knots, reading a map or compass, and identifying common plants and wildlife. While these skills are not mandatory to attend summer camps, and some camps may even teach them, they can enhance their enjoyment of outdoor activities and boost their confidence in nature. This is also helpful for some children, as the activities they will be working on there won’t be completely unfamiliar to them, and practicing them beforehand can provide a sense of comfort and confidence.

Personal Hygiene and Care

Emphasize the importance of personal hygiene to prevent the spread of germs and maintain good health at camp. Teach your child how to brush their teeth, wash their hands properly, shower regularly and thoroughly and create a self-care routine that will ensure their well-being and health. It is also necessary that your child creates habits that help them be healthier, such as drinking lots of water regularly, having a healthy and balanced diet, and using sunscreen and insect repellent as needed. Work with them to create a routine that they can implement at home before going to camp, so by the time they are there, this will seem natural and regular and it’s going to be hard to forget.

Basic First Aid

Teaching your child basic first aid skills can empower them to respond effectively to minor injuries or emergencies while at camp and even serve as a life-long useful skill. They don’t need to know very advanced skills, but some basic ones like how to clean and dress wounds, recognize signs of dehydration or heat exhaustion, can come in handy in an emergency, and this way they also know when to seek help.

Swimming and Water Safety

If your child will be participating in water activities at camp, ensure they are comfortable and confident in the water. Most camps do quick tests to make sure kids know how to swim safely, so it’s important that when your child does this, they already know basic swimming skills, water safety rules, and how to recognize and respond to potential water hazards.

Equipping your child with essential skills before camp sets them up for a successful and rewarding summer adventure. By teaching them basic personal, interpersonal and safety skills you empower them to thrive in a camp environment and make the most of their summer experiences. This way, your child will feel more comfortable when facing camp challenges, unfamiliar situations and new experiences, and can embark on their camp journey with confidence, independence, and readiness to embrace new opportunities for growth.
