Day Camp or Sleepaway Camp: Which One Fits Your Child's Needs?.

If you’re not sure whether to choose a day camp or a sleepaway camp for your child this summer, take a look at this guide, which states the benefits and differences of both.

December 5, 2023

Choosing between a day camp and a sleepaway camp for your child’s summer experience is a significant choice for parents and can be difficult to make. Each one offers unique advantages and possibilities, but one may be a better fit than the other depending on your kid’s age, personality, interests and skills. To help you make an informed decision, let’s explore the main characteristics that differentiate day camps from sleepaway camps, so you can analyze how they align to your child’s needs.

Day Camp

Summer day camps have different benefits that are specially convenient for kids aged two to eight years old. Nevertheless, some children may find this better no matter their age. Day camps offer structured routines, they usually follow a daily schedule that provides children with a sense of familiarity and predictability. But this doesn’t mean that they become boring or too repetitive, as they offer a wide range of activities, from sports and arts to educational programs. You can also find specialized day camps, which will offer skill building in a more specific theme.

Some kids might prefer to head back home after a day of activities, which can provide comfort and alleviate any homesickness. This is one of the main reasons why day camps are a good place to start if your child is still very young, as sending them straight to a sleepaway camp may feel a bit too much for them, and they might not be ready for an extended period of time away from home. It allows them to enjoy camp activities while sleeping in their own bed and starts introducing them to a sense of independence.

When you choose day camps, you will usually look for the ones that are closer to your home and local community. Most people do this, so it becomes an excellent opportunity for your kid to develop friendships and bonds with neighbors, classmates and other kids that live nearby.

Sleepaway Camp

One of the most notable features of sleepaway camps is that they foster independence as children learn to manage daily tasks, make decisions, and solve problems away from home. Throughout their summer, they’ll develop resilience by facing new challenges and learning to overcome them in fun ways with the help of their friends and counselors.

Sleepaway camps offer immersive experiences, in which campers are fully immersed in the camp environment, allowing them to form deeper connections with fellow campers and create lasting memories. This controlled environment also helps them feel safer while exploring and acquiring new skills. This is why sleepaway camps are more suitable for older children and teenagers who are prepared for the adventure and extended separation from home.

When there, children will take part in programs that focus on skill-building, whether in outdoor activities, leadership, or specialized areas of interest. Sleepaway camps often offer a connection to nature and outdoor adventures, providing campers with unique experiences like hiking, canoeing, and camping. This is great for having some time away from the screens, as they will reconnect with more recreational and physical experiences. As they overcome different challenges and succeed in a more independent setting, they will gain a sense of accomplishment and personal growth that ultimately stays with them for life.

Now that you know the main aspects of these types of summer camps, you can make a more informed decision for your child’s summer experience. You should focus on their age, comfort level, and the experience you want them to have. It's essential to involve your child in the decision-making process, as their interests and readiness for independence should be considered. Ask them what they want, what they are expecting of this experience and even their concerns. Encourage them to challenge their skills and obstacles, but be considerate about their personality and capabilities.

In some cases, a combination of both types of camps can provide a well-rounded camp experience. There are many short-term sleepaway camps in which your child doesn’t have to be away from home for a long period of time, but gets to experience the taste of what it’s like. And remember, whether day camp or sleepaway camp, the goal is to create an enriching and memorable summer for your child that aligns with their unique needs and preferences.
